The Difference Between Medical and Recreational Marijuana

Marijuana is not just a recreational drug, as most of us tend to think. In fact, it is proven to contain medicinal properties as well. It is used both as a medical drug to combat a range of diseases.

However, it’s true that it is most popularly used as a recreational drug around the world. Due to its dual use, there’s a lot of confusion regarding marijuana. If you are confused too, let’s look at the major differences between medical and recreational marijuana:

What is Medical Marijuana?

Medical marijuana is the unprocessed plant that is used to cure certain health conditions. The different chemicals in the plant are known as cannabinoids that have a vast range of effects on the body. The two main chemicals in medical marijuana are Tetrahydrocannabinol also known as THC, which induces the ‘high’ effect on the mind. The other chemical is known as cannabidiol or CBD that has a psychoactive impact on the mind.

What is Recreational Marijuana?

Recreational marijuana is popular by several names including pot and weed. It is not certified for use for any medical condition. The biggest difference between medical marijuana and recreational marijuana is that the recreational variety consists of an increased amount of THC which gives a stronger high effect. It has a lower amount of medical properties.

Recommendation

To make use of medical marijuana, you need a prescription from your doctor. Your eligibility depends upon your health condition. Furthermore, your medical marijuana prescription needs to be updated regularly.

Recreational weed, on the other hand, doesn’t require a recommendation. If you are living in a state where recreational marijuana is legal, you can enter a recreational marijuana dispensary and buy it right away. If you meet the minimum age requirement, you are free to buy recreational cannabis in these states without any hassle.

Appropriate Age

The appropriate age to buy medical marijuana is 18 years. If you are younger, you will not be permitted to use medical marijuana even if your health condition requires it. However, the appropriate age for recreational marijuana is 21 years.

Medical weed is different from recreational weed on many grounds. Since the new movement, more states have legalized medical marijuana as compared to recreational pot.
