Marijuana on the 2020 Ballot in Several States

The 2020 American election is going to be a big one. Not only is 2020 a presidential election year – and a very contentious one at that – there are numerous congress seats up for election as well. This year, 33 (of 100) senate seats, all seats in the House of Representatives (435), and 11 state governor positions all up for election. Not to mention state and local representatives and council races.

Additionally, states and counties around the country will have local and state measures that will be going before voters. Several states have marijuana legalization measures on the ballot in 2020. These four states have legalization of recreational usage of marijuana on their 2020 ballots:

  • Arizona
  • Montana
  • New Jersey
  • South Dakota

Two other states have medical marijuana legalization measures on their 2020 ballots:

  • Mississippi
  • South Dakota

Likely Coming in 2021

As marijuana legalization progresses throughout the country, many other states are considering putting legalization measures on their ballots, but likely not until 2021. They include:

  • Arkansas – Considering recreational marijuana legalization in 2021
  • Florida – Considering recreational marijuana legalization in 2021
  • Idaho – Considering medical marijuana legalization in 2021
  • Ohio – Considering recreational marijuana legalization in 2021
  • North Dakota – Considering recreational marijuana legalization in 2021
  • Missouri – Considering recreational marijuana legalization in 2021
  • Oklahoma – Considering recreational marijuana legalization in 2021

With attitudes about marijuana legalization changing in recent years, advocates for legalization are hopeful that legalization measures will continue to pass throughout the country. And while marijuana remains illegal at the federal level, that may eventually change as more and more states choose legalization.
